I’m sorry it’s taken me so many days to reply to your comment. And… thank you very much for your comment! It’s really encouraging ;) At first, I was worried about posting so many spoilers, so it’s been a pleasant surprise people are actually liking them.Unfortunately, the Yowapeda fanbase isn’t that large over here and getting info and updates on the manga might be difficult… but to be honest, I’m enjoying the later half of the manga more than the first, hence this blog seems to exist solely for the purpose of spoiling you about it, ha ha.
Of course I don’t mind your question. I’m happy to be able to help, no matter how much I still need to work on my Japanese, so I apologize for any involuntary mistranslations or mistakes I’ll be making here… Ok then, about Shinkai? I still claim he’s one of the nicest people around in this manga d-_^. He might give you the wrong impression because he spends the few first volumes he’s featured in looking all gloomy -and not saying much-… but he’s in fact very friendly and kind, so it’s no wonder he’s well-liked by his underclassmen. Izumida is sort of a big fan of his, for starters. Shinkai noticeably also calls others by their given names, especifically the other Hakogaku seniors (the only person around to call Arakita “Yasutomo”? He is. Making it all the more significant because Arakita’s given name can ironically be read as “Peaceful Friend”), and Tadokoro. Also, author Wataru Watanabe describes Shinkai as a “nice guy”, and mentions in the official databook one of Shinkai’s mannerisms is based off real cyclist Alberto Contador (who’s nicknamed “El Pistolero”, or The Gunman; it shouldn’t be hard to guess what particular mannerism of Shinkai’s we’re talking about then); Watanabe also adds -half jokingly- the idea of his design was to prove a male character with prominent lips could be handsome, too (I agree /fangirlish comment off).
Shinkai is the ace sprinter of the Hakogaku team with the No.4, and is nicknamed “The Demon of the Straight Path of Hakone” (箱根の直線の鬼, Hakone no Chokusen no Oni, lit. “Hakone’s Straight Line Demon”). That’s where his “maniac” side comes from: once he releases his whole strength when riding, he’s compared to a furious demon who’d been “chained down”, and was then unshackled to roam free. And, yes, that means he has an accompanying change in his personality as well, hence he’s… the only, maybe?… person who’s managed to freak out Midousuji (in actuality, though, Midousuji wasn’t as afraid of Shinkai as he was baffled by his “Demon” side). On the other hand… the rabbit he takes care of is named Usakichi (from Usagi = “rabbit”, and “kichi”, meaning “good luck”, a common character found in male names in Japan). His background story is closely linked to that rabbit…
